Research (task 1)
Jobs in the film industry:
Runner:
One of the most junior positions in the film production development it is also often an entry point into a career. Its a runners job and responsibility to carry out administrative tasks and aid the smooth running of film production This work involves setting up locations for a shoot, hiring props and transporting equipment, among other tasks required by the director, actors and other members of the film crew.
The position of a runner often comes with demanding hours and a fast paced working environment. Many runners are hired by being in the right place at the right time or through their contacts rather than their qualifications, and can remain in the position for a year or longer before progressing onto researcher roles.
The pay rate for being a runner varies from roughly £8/hr to £14/hr depending on the type of production, in many cases however, particularly from larger production companies people are hired as runners but as volunteers as this job, being a starting point into a film production career, is highly competitive and is often seen as work experience to add to a future CV.
Progression:
Some TV companies such as Channel 4 and BBC often advertise runner vacancies under the career section on their website, they are often quite popular with applicants so to gain as much experience before applying for a role like this can often push you above other applicants.
Hair and Makeup- artists:
Providing a crucial visual aspect to any film, hair stylists and make-up artists ensure the actors in a film appear authentic to the time period the film is set, its geographical location and age of the character they're playing, as well as a physical state of what the character a particular actor may be playing e.g horror movies may involve an injury of some sort.
This role requires a precision to detail as well as a broad understanding of hair and makeup and the history behind it.
For this job candidates will often have to be qualified at minimum of a Level 2 or 3 in media-make up or hairdressing.
Many people however are also spotted for this type of job as candidates may have a public portfolio showing their skills on social media and may gage a large following due to their talents which of course helps publicise themselves to companies looking to hire people in Hair and Make-up.
Again the pay rate often varies depending on what type of production. Privatly working MUAs can earn from £12/hr to £30/hr however employed Make-up and hair dressing artists can earn a yearly salary of £40 000 with the top 10% earning roughly £95 000 per annum.
Progression:
With Hair and makeup artists a lot of their work is self employed or freelance work and rely on building a public portfolio displaying their work which then attracts popularity and business.
Lighting technician:
In any film, good lighting is crucial to creating the right atmosphere. This is what a lighting technician brings to the production process through technical knowledge, a good level of physical fitness for lifting heavy lighting equipment as well as creative flair. Many lighting technicians working in the film industry are already qualified electricians, while some may also have a specialist degree in a relevant subject such as lighting technology or design. pre-entry experience into this role is essential - whether that's through finding a job as a technician, helping on student film projects while you're studying or securing work experience with a professional.
The salary for a lighting technician averages at about £15 000 per year
Most film production vacancies closest to Cambridgeshire are based in London, where many of the Head quarters for companies are based, these include volunteer opportunities and apprenticeships as well as many more senior roles.
There are many opportunities but most are based in large cities such as London which depending on where you live can become quite a commute and may turn people away from the idea.
Progression:
This tends to be employed as a permanent position, opportunities for to be employed as a lighting technician, similar to a running job can often be found under a vacancies tab on a production companies website.
Current opportunities
